NEW DRAWING - Completed last night
Denmark, Copenhagen
43mm x 22mm
Pencil, scalpel, rabbit skin gesso on quarter sawn oak.

I thought I would put up a series of images here of this work. As some of you may know I had originally started my current drawing project back in Sept 2012. Just after I completed the first version of Copenhagen in April 2013 I decided to call a stop to the project as essentially I wasn't satisfied with certain aesthetic criteria regarding materials and format. I think the first batch of work function individually but as a coherent piece of work there were things that I was fundamentally unhappy with. I restarted the project in April last year and as of last night I am at the same point I was at when I abandoned it. I thought I would post images here of the two drawings just so that you can get an idea of the differences. With the new batch of works every image was resourced apart from this one, which by a fortuitous accident I deigned to redraw from the same image. I think this is a neat little rejoinder to heading into the next phase of the project and I think its certainly interesting to see the comparison in materials and technique. They are both fundamentally different pieces of work and operate in different ways, not only in the tone and the clarity but in the rendering and application. I do feel justified in making the original decision to abandon the project, but it does beg an awful lot of questions.

    Drawing Project - The World

This blog aims to document the process of my current project in which I am seeking to produce a miniature drawing of every capital city in the world There are are currently 196. This will on completion function as one piece of work.

The works are produced using archive quality materials. The oak blocks were made up using quarter sawn oak and cut by Letterfrack conservation in Galway. All of the oak blocks have been sized using rabbit skin glue, the gesso was then made up using the rabbit skin glue and white ground and six layers of gesso applied to all 196 oak blocks. The drawings are produced with pencil, scalpel and burnishing tools.

Chris Leach is an artist based in Ireland - producing drawn works with a slant towards the political.
